Welcome to my personal website! My name is Khoi, I’m Vietnamese born and raised, currently residing in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. I graduated with a BSc in Computer Science in June 2024 at Fulbright University Vietnam, the country’s first and only (so-far) liberal arts institution.
My journey started with me going to university in hope of pursuing a career in social science. As an attempt to try out a completely new field, I took the Introduction to Biology course out of curiosity and was motivated by the lecturer’s enthusiasm. In my 2nd and 3rd year, I picked up CS courses at Fulbright and in my 4th year, came back to studying Biology with Human Genetics and Human Physiology.
My interests involves human genetics, developing bioinformatics pipelines and employing various ML/AI responsible practices to study the human genomics.
This website is probably going to be updated infrequently, but I hope it can be used as a place to record my
career and life experiences. Feel free to stick around and share your inputs, as well as contacting me for any possible collaboration.
Milestones:
These are the experiences that shaped my career, of course, I have learned more
from the times I
than when I succeeded.
2025-Nov: A professor at UBC accepted me with funding for a masters program, but UBC rejected my application because the institution where I obtained my BSc is not part of their eligible database.
2025-Sep: Joined St Jude's BioHackathon to work on flowjomojo, a Drag-and-Drop Nextflow pipeline construction tool.
2025-May: Got accepted to UMich Ann Arbor for MSc in Bioinformatics but couldn't go because there's no funding.
2025-Mar: Worked on scxa-tertiary-workflow from EMBL-EBI; modularizing workflows and ensuring inputs & outputs.
2025-Jan: Started a job as a Bioinformatics Technician at Pacific Informatics.
2024-Nov: Presented my poster on Responsible AI in Genomics Research at Genome Informatics (Hinxton, UK).
2024-Oct: Presented Responsible AI in Genomics Research at Explainable AI and Biology (online).
2024-Oct: Got rejected for conference visa to the UK.
2024-Jun: Started working as a Bioinformatician at BioTuring.
2024-Jun: Graduated from Fulbright University Vietnam, major in Computer Science.
2024-May: Got rejected to BioTuring's position initially because I couldn't pass the interview.
2024-May: Became a mentee for the BioDev's Network's Future Innovator Mentorship Program.
2024-Feb: I applied to multiple positions, from webdev to UX/UI to data analysts... but I would receive no reply.
2023-Jun: Told by a professor that pursuing bioinformatics is tough in Vietnam; later realized opportunities can make a difference.
